Background of the Study
Regional language policies in Nigeria play a significant role in shaping broadcast communication, influencing phonetic patterns in different parts of the country. This study compares the phonetic characteristics of broadcasts from northern and southern regions, focusing on pronunciation, intonation, and speech clarity. In the North, where languages such as Hausa dominate, broadcast speech often reflects specific phonetic norms influenced by regional language policies and cultural practices (Ude, 2023). Conversely, southern broadcasts, influenced by Yoruba, Igbo, and English, may exhibit different phonetic adaptations due to diverse linguistic inputs (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing broadcast samples, this research aims to identify how government language policies and regional cultural factors contribute to phonetic variation. The study further explores the implications of these differences for national communication standards and language preservation, providing a comprehensive view of how regional policies affect spoken language in media (Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the influence of regional language policies on broadcast phonetics, there is limited comparative research examining how these policies shape pronunciation and speech patterns in Nigeria. Variations between northern and southern broadcasts may lead to inconsistencies in national media communication and affect audience comprehension (Ude, 2023). The absence of detailed analyses hampers efforts to standardize broadcasting practices while respecting regional linguistic diversity (Okafor, 2024). Without systematic study, policymakers and media practitioners lack the insights needed to balance uniform communication with cultural preservation (Adebayo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare phonetic features in northern and southern broadcasts.

  • To analyze the impact of regional language policies on pronunciation.

  • To provide recommendations for harmonizing broadcast communication.

Research Questions

  • How do phonetic patterns differ between northern and southern broadcasts?

  • What role do regional language policies play in these differences?

  • How can media communication be standardized while respecting regional diversity?

Significance of the Study
This study offers crucial insights into the impact of regional language policies on Nigerian broadcast phonetics, providing a framework for improving communication standards while honoring cultural diversity. The findings will aid policymakers, broadcasters, and linguists in developing strategies that balance standardization with regional variation (Ude, 2023; Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on broadcast media in northern and southern Nigeria and does not include other regions or forms of communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetics: The study of speech sounds and their production.

  • Language Policies: Official guidelines governing language use in public communication.
